Choosing Your Industry

How the industry you select shapes your chart of accounts, expense categories, and the items the platform flags — with a tour of the 44 industries available.

The industry-selection step inside the Business Profile setup

During signup and again in the onboarding screen titled Confirm Firm Name, you choose an Industry. The list contains 44 options — from Construction and Restaurant to SaaS and Real Estate — plus a catch-all called Other. The industry you pick drives a meaningful part of how your reports are built, so it is worth choosing carefully.

Why your industry matters

  • It selects the chart of accounts template used to categorize your transactions. A restaurant gets food-cost and labor accounts; a real-estate firm gets commission and listing expense accounts.
  • It tunes the keyword rules that classify your expenses. The same vendor name can mean different things across industries, and the platform applies the right interpretation.
  • It shapes the flagged-items list. Industry-specific edge cases (for example, "tools and small equipment" for a contractor) are surfaced more accurately.
  • It informs the items the platform highlights as potentially worth discussing with your tax professional — for example, common deductions associated with your sector.

How to pick the right one

  • Open the Industry dropdown — it is searchable. Start typing your line of business (for example, "plumb" surfaces Plumbing & HVAC).
  • Pick the closest match. The list covers common categories such as Accounting & Tax Services, Construction, Consulting, E-Commerce, Healthcare, Insurance, Real Estate, Restaurant / Food Service, Retail, SaaS / Software, and Transportation.
  • If nothing fits exactly, choose Other. The platform will still use a sensible default chart of accounts.
  • If you operate across two industries (for example, a real-estate brokerage that also rents short-term properties), pick the one that represents the larger share of revenue.

You can change your industry later from the Business Profile section of your dashboard. Reports generated before the change keep their original categorization; new uploads use the updated industry.
